Conversations with My Dad In My Dream
My Dad has passed on for more than 10 years and I still missed him dearly.
Every now and then, he would appear in my dream.
Two nights ago, I dreamt of him again. Here is the funny conversation we had …. don’t worry, its past seventh month, so its safe to read.
Dad : Son, your Mom told me that you are making a lot of money from properties. Is that true?
Me happily answered : Yes Dad.
Dad said again in his usual stern voice: Mom said you spent a lot of money on travelling, and now because of Covid, you spent money on sports cars, changing four cars in this year along.
Me guilty : Ahhh…. Yes Dad.
I did not know Mom was aware. Perhaps she is not, after all this is a dream right ?
Dad : You should save the money.
Me : Dad, I already have enough savings.
Dad : Then you should buy property.
Me : Dad, I have two big houses and many other properties.
Dad, impatient, voice a little more assertive : You must keep some money for my three grandchildren.
Me : Yes Dad, they will get at least one property each when I passed on. They will be ok Dad.
Dad, getting agitated : Did you use the money to pamper Mom?
Me : Yes, Dad. Everything she likes, she gets. She lacks nothing. Sisters and brothers are all showering her with attention, love and travels.
Dad beamed and said : I can see you staying in a big house. Why do you need so much space ?
Me : So I can park my cars and motorcycles.
Dad : You still got spare space, I can see. What are you planning to buy next ?
Me : A boat. I need a space to park the boat at home.
Dad : Si Gin Na, wanna buy boat?
{ in singlish translation : si gin na – means naughty young child, which was a phase my Dad used on me when I was naughty }
Dad paused and continue: Quickly go and buy, don’t wait. Everything I asked, you say you have. So go buy a boat, Son, you deserved it.
Me : Yes Dad, I buy boat and then bring you and Mom go sailing ok ?
Dad : I already died. Got no legs. I float everywhere, like you see in the movies. It’s like sailing. I know how to sail already. But don’t worry, wherever you go, I will sail with you.
Dad paused and continue: Son, I want you to do it soon. Your Mom is getting older. You must hurry, bring her out before Mr. Yan asked to meet her.
{{ Singlish translation : Mr Yan refers to the God who is the judge of death, he decides who gets tortured and who gets a good life after death }}
Me, eyes wet and said : Thank you Dad, I will hurry. I love you, Dad.
Dad disappearing and whispering: Bye Big Head, I love you too.
Me, speaking softly to myself, see you soon Dad.
